STFC Objectives

The 21st Century Challenge Enabling Fund supports the application of innovative solutions arising from STFC-funded science, skills and facilities to address 21st Century Challenges in areas such as energy, environment, healthcare, and security, food, agritech resilience and urbanisation. This strategic theme also includes the Newton Fund and Global Challenge Research Fund which are focused on addressing economic development and welfare of developing countries.

Constitution of the 21st Century Challenge Panel

The 21st Century Challenge Panel assesses applications for funding to various schemes operated through the STFC 21st Century Challenge Programme. The members of the College are called upon as appropriate to the theme and nature of the call. Membership of the College is for three years.

Remit of the 21st Century Challenge Panel

The Panel assesses grant applications received against 21st Century Challenge calls and makes recommendations on funding taking account, where appropriate, of the input of specialist peer reviewers. The Panel should also have regard with respect to the overall strategy and policy of STFC’s Council and Science Board and to the budget position as advised by the Programme Manager.

Responsibilities of College and Panel Members
  • Be a member of the College for the period of three years
  • Agree to assess and make recommendations on up to 20 applications for funding in a 12-month period
  • Attend panel meetings for up to four days per years
  • Provide a summary of their expertise to facilitate allocation of Global21st Century Challenge proposals for assessment

College members are required to sign a standard STFC non-disclosure agreement.
