Business incubation: a key speciality

From brilliant ideas to booming businesses

Entrepreneurial businesses face many challenges and hurdles as they take their critical first steps towards market entry. Business incubation centres (BICs) can make a vital contribution in helping them negotiate those steps.

Building on our track record of setting up many spinouts from our own intellectual property (IP), we have established a spectrum of incubation initiatives at Harwell Campus and Sci-Tech Daresbury as prime locations for inventive start-ups, SMEs and early-stage subsidiaries:

Office and laboratory space; business support services; networking opportunities – these are standard features of most business incubators. But our initiatives go much further, providing access to globally renowned experts and world-class IP, state-of-the-art technology and equipment and attractive opportunities for funding and investment.

  • Around 100 companies in sectors such as biomedicine, energy and security have already benefited from our business incubators
  • Over 140 jobs have been created to date
  • Companies in our incubators have secured over £80m+ of investment/funding
  • Around 60 new products have been developed and 35 patents awarded
  • Around 50% of incubatees are successfully exporting products and services
  • A majority of incubatees have developed collaborative initiatives with one other

Now we aim to extend our unique approach by developing new ventures, such as the proposed Higgs Centre for Innovation, while further facilitating access to our capabilities through initiatives such as the Campus Technology Hub (CTH).
