Enabling the path to successful product development

Engineering R&D equipment and expertise plays a vital role in the process that turns imaginative ideas into successful products. For fledgling businesses, the expense, time and effort involved in developing, buying or accessing the right skills and facilities can be daunting.

Based at Daresbury Laboratory on the Sci-Tech Daresbury campus, the Campus Technology Hub (CTH) is a purpose-built engineering facility. Many challenges are faced when moving from concept to prototype stage due to limitations in facilities and resource.

The CTH aims to provide an affordable mechanism for entrepreneurs and others to access an impressive array of technologies, equipment and expertise, eliminating the need to develop, buy or pay prohibitively high prices to use engineering R&D capabilities.

Aimed at projects of 1 month to 2 years, CTH offers:

  • 430m² laboratory space for ‘proof of concept’ projects including opportunities for collaborations
  • Flexible power, network and benching for project-specific builds
  • Access to a pool of test equipment
  • Configured and flexible workspace, available for multi-users
  • Technical training and in-house expertise

Prototyping facilities available in the CTH include:

  • Fortus 400 FDM 3D Printer
  • Objet Connex 350 Multi-Material 3D Printer
  • Concept LASER MLab Metal 3D Printer
  • LPKF ProtoLaser U3 3D material laser
  • Full range of Keysight electronic test and measurement equipment
  • Haas Minimill2 machining Centre
  • Haas VF740 machining Centre

The CTH also houses an ebeam EBLab 200 which is the first of its kind to be installed in the UK. It provides an easy way to test out new applications for electron beams in manufacturing processes such as polymer processing, ink curing and surface sterilisation.
