Pioneering clusters

The fast-growing clusters at Harwell Campus and at Sci-Tech Daresbury play a pivotal role in our campuses’ ability to support businesses and other organisations based there.

The opportunity to join clusters, to work side by side with them or to become part of their supply chains can add an extra dimension to any business. Each cluster represents a critical mass of world-class expertise in the development and commercialisation of ground-breaking products, services and applications – expertise that other businesses can tap into, add to and reinforce.

The clusters have a proven track record in:

  • Opening up new markets
  • Securing investment from Government and industry
  • Attracting business and academic expertise, including ‘big hitters’ from both communities
  • Providing opportunities for collaboration, co-operation, mentoring and peer support/learning

The space cluster at Harwell Campus, also known as the UK Space Gateway is one example of the cluster model in action. It incorporates:

  • World-leading companies such as Aero Sekur, Magellium, VEGA and MDA Space & Robotics
  • International organisations such as the European Space Agency (ESA), through its European Centre for Space Applications and Telecommunications (ECSAT) and Business Incubation Centre

The Innovate UK Satellite Applications Catapult is also acting as a hub for a new, specialist cluster at Harwell Campus focused on satellite technology.

Our campuses’ ability to nurture successful clusters is reflected, too, in Innovate UK's Launchpad initiative, with the Harwell Space Launchpad in its second year at Harwell Campus supporting the space sector; and the Materials and Manufacturing North West Launchpad (partly centred on Sci-Tech Daresbury) stimulating the development of a regional materials and manufacturing cluster.
