We are creating a unified UKRI website that brings together the existing research council, Innovate UK and Research England websites.

National apprentice week: 6 – 10 March

It’s National Apprentice week: 6th - 10th March. Here at STFC we’re very proud of our Apprentice Training Scheme, and across our sites we are currently running recruitment campaigns.

We have roles based at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in South Oxfordshire and at our Daresbury Laboratory in Cheshire for our Advanced Engineering Apprenticeships.  But our apprenticeships don’t just stop there keep your eyes open for computing and IT apprenticeships coming soon.

All our apprenticeships take place over four years, with the first year being off site at external training facilities. From the second year onwards it continues at the appointed laboratory. Our apprentices learn by being directly involved in exciting projects, as well as continuing their academic studies on day release – with the expectation of achieving a foundation degree at the end of year four. If that sounds like something you’d find rewarding, then have a look at our adverts. You’ll need to get your application in soon.

After finishing their course, some of our apprentices have gone on to work at the laboratory; others have embarked on a full- or part-time university degree course.

Tom Finch: Electrical Technician

I started the apprenticeship in 2012. I was in the second year of college finishing my A-levels, but I wasn’t really interested – I just didn’t know what else to do. Everyone else was going off to university, and I didn’t think it was going to be for me.

I’d always liked the idea of doing an engineering degree, so I thought I’d look at apprenticeships, because you get paid a wage while you are learning.
