Here at STFC we’re very proud of our Apprentice Training Scheme, and across our sites we currently have a number of vacancies available.
From STEM roles, such as engineering and electrical, to working in cyber security or leading a team as a project manager, STFC offer a wide range of apprenticeships.
You can find out more about these different roles and see videos of some of our apprentices below.
Based across our world-class facilities at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in South Oxfordshire, Daresbury Laboratory in Cheshire, and the UK Astronomy Technology Centre in Edinburgh, as an apprentice you will get first-hand experience working on some of the UK’s biggest science projects.
Our apprentices learn by being directly involved in exciting projects, as well as continuing their academic studies on day release – to allow them to achieve their qualification. After finishing their course, most apprentices go on to work at the laboratory; some progressing onto degrees as part of their continuing development with STFC.
Here is some more information about STFC’s apprenticeships:
All our engineering apprenticeships take place over four years, with the first year being off site at external training facilities. These currently cover mechanical, electronic and electrical engineering.
Applications for Rutherford Appleton Laboratory are now closed.
Applications for engineering apprentices based at Daresbury Laboratory now closed.
If you want a career in software development we have exciting opportunities to work with the latest technologies to drive advances in both hardware and software that have genuine real world application. These apprenticeships are for four years and allow students to study towards a BSc (Hons) in Digital and Technology Solutions.
The largest cohort is the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Didcot, however Cyber Security apprenticeships are available at Daresbury Laboratory with access to STFC’s supercomputing facility, the Hartree Centre.
There are seven planned vacancies for 2018 with applications opening soon.
Based at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, Level 3 apprenticeships are available in the following areas:
Work in a fast paced environment at the heart of UK science and technology as an IT apprentice; a two year apprenticeship working towards the Level 3 Advanced IT apprenticeship. The programme will cover how to operate computers and databases, as well as how to use and maintain IT systems and networks. As an apprentice, you will also develop a professional working style, learn safe working practices, become aware of the work environment and learn how to communicate effectively with colleagues and customers.
IT apprenticeships are available at both Daresbury Laboratory and Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, however there are currently no vacancies planned for 2018.
STFC offer a Level 4 apprenticeship in project management. Based at Daresbury Laboratory, apprentices gain in-depth experience of applying core project management processes, like scheduling and financial management, to the dynamic, exciting world of scientific discovery.
2018 applications are now closed.
