The impact of STFC research and technology can impact our lives in many different ways. Just as there are many impacts at different levels of society, there are many different ways to report this impact.
This includes individual case studies on specific impact examples studies of particular subject areas and facility types, reports on underpinning fundamental technology and studies which investigate the impact to entire industry sectors or the UK economy.
The following studies and reports illustrate this range of impacts and have been carried out either by or in collaboration with key stakeholders.
The Summary Bibliometric Analyses in Astronomy and Physics report examines the UK's bibliometric performance in relation to other leading scientific nations. The analysis was undertaken by Clarivate Analytics and draws upon their unique Field-Normalised citation impact (NCIf) factor. Impact profiles have been included in the analysis, which show the distribution of papers according to their NCIf, by country.Download PDF
This ISIS Lifetime Impact Study is an independent, in-depth review of the ISIS neutron and muon source, which outlines the wide range of economic and social impacts of the facility. This ambitious and far-reaching evaluation was commissioned as a result of recommendations from the BEIS "Big Science and Innovation Report". Many of the conclusions, drawn independently, demonstrate the direct relevance of the facility to the UK's Industrial Strategy, announced in January 2017. The ISIS Lifetime Impact Study by Technopolis, an independent group of economists, has estimated the immediate direct economic impact of ISIS over 30 years.
