Apprentices at Daresbury Laboratory were recently honoured at an event attended by STFC Chief Executive Mark Thomson.
The annual graduation and awards ceremony is our way of celebrating the excellent work done by apprentices and the developments they have made.
Two apprentices graduated, with nine new starters signing their deed of apprenticeship. Five Apprentices were given awards for their outstanding work.
Outreach Award for an individual who has made significant contribution(s) towards public engagement and outreach, whilst acting as an ambassador for the STFC Apprenticeship Scheme. Winner: Louise Smith, ASTeC department.
Recognition Award for an individual who has consistently demonstrated a positive attitude towards and upheld the values of UK Research & Innovation values throughout their work at STFC. Winner: Alex Headspith, Technology department.
Impact Award to recognise an apprentice who stands out from their peers and has made noteworthy achievements in their area of expertise. It is for an apprentice who has created, adapted or implemented an outstanding piece of work in their area. Winner: Geoff Morris, Detector Systems Group department for his work during his placement at La Palma, where he was able to suggest a system which would save time and money in producing prototypes.
Peer Support Award, voted for by the apprentices themselves, to recognise the support of another apprentice who has gone above and beyond in providing support, advice and guidance to other Apprentices. Winner: Tom Kelly, Technology department. Tom was also nominated as a finalist in North West Training Council’s (NWTC) Apprentice of the Year awards in October, a remarkable achieving which pitted him against a select few to be nominated for this achievement.
Apprentice of the Year 2018 was awarded to Will Spencer from the Technology department for his positive attitude, experience and skills gained, progress made and advocacy of apprenticeships.
Both Tom and Will graduated from their apprenticeships this year and have now started their careers as technicians within STFC.
