Daresbury Laboratory technician Alex Headspith has won the North West BT Advanced Apprentice of the Year award, in the regional round of the prestigious National Apprenticeship Awards 2020.
Now in their 17th year, the National Apprenticeship Awards celebrate the very best employers, apprentices and opportunities across the country, highlighting the benefits that successful apprenticeship schemes can bring to individuals, businesses and local communities.
Alex, a mechanical technician, has just finished his apprenticeship at Daresbury Laboratory, which is part of the Science and Technology Facilities Council and located at Sci-Tech Daresbury. During this time, his accomplishments include learning specialist engineering and manufacturing techniques, and becoming lead technician on a ‘first of its kind’ project. He also took up the valuable opportunity to experience working internationally at CERN, and has become a valuable STEM ambassador, inspiring our next generations to take up STEM subjects, and demonstrating their value in life and future careers.
Alex chose to do his apprenticeship at Daresbury Laboratory as he believed this was the best way to gain skills in the sector he wanted to work in. He said:
“I have always had a passion for engineering and decided at a young age that this was the career for me.”
He believes others can learn from his experience. “At school, I was pushed towards academia and was told apprenticeships would lead me nowhere. I left school at 16 and joined STFC. The opportunities I’ve had as an apprentice are fantastic, yet my school never promoted it.”
Upon receiving his award, and selected over hundreds of applicants, Alex said, “I am truly honoured to have received the award. Last year I received the NWTC R.W Lofthouse apprentice of the year award and this year I have been named the NW Apprentice of the Year. These two awards are my greatest personal achievements and I am so proud to be recognised in this way.”
Alex now goes through to the National Apprenticeship Awards 2020 final, the winner of which will be announced at a virtual award ceremony on Wednesday 25th November.
Jonathan Aghanian, Apprenticeship Coordinator at Daresbury Laboratory, said: “We are all delighted to hear the news that Alex has been awarded NW Apprentice of the year and through to the national finals. He has become an extremely accomplished technician, who has a confident and inspirational nature. This will be Alex’s second apprenticeship award and we are all really proud of his hard work.”
