Last week, we inspired future engineers with a day of engineering activities in support of the government’s 'Year of Engineering’ campaign.
Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) welcomed 100 sixth-formers to an 'Exploring Engineering Day'. The students received a captivating talk on the James Webb Space Telescope and invaluable career advice by staff from a variety of departments including: Scientific Computing, the Central Laser Facility, RAL Space and Technology.
The students were then treated to a tour of RAL’s Scientific Computing Department, the Central Laser Facility, and ISIS Neutron and Muon Source where they learnt about STFC’s vast array of engineering projects.
Highlights of the day included building solar cars (which were then pitted against each other in some pretty tense races); receiving an insight into how lasers are used in space; and taking part in an Ada Lovelace-themed activity that challenged the students’ coding abilities.
