Forthcoming Projects Peer Review Panel (PPRP) meeting - June 2018

17 April 2018

The next meeting of the Projects Peer Review Panel (PPRP) will take place in the Lecture Theatre, Daresbury Laboratory, Daresbury, WA4 4AD on 5 June 2018. The Panel will be reviewing two project proposals.

Members of the science community should contact George Madden on telephone 01793 442049 or e-mail if they are likely to attend the open presentation.

The proposals being reviewed are as follows:

10:15 – 11.30: DUNE PIP-II HB650 Cryomodules

As part of the UK's In Kind Contribution (IKC) to the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment, the UK will provide superconducting RF (SRF) cavities and assembled cryomodules for the new PIP-II SRF Linac at Fermilab, building on experience gained from the ESS high-beta cavity programme and the HL-LHC prototype cryomodule assembly which are both funded to conclude at Daresbury Laboratory in FY20/21. The scope of the expected delivery to FNAL will be to enhance UK industry fabrication capability for SRF accelerating structures, procurement of high purity niobium sheets and HB650 cavity fabrication to FNAL specifications and to validate the performance of these structures using the existing SRF testing infrastructure available at Daresbury Laboratory.

14:30 – 15:30: LBNF/DUNE Beam and Target System

The UK group proposes to carry out a programme of work focused on the design of the LBNF target and associated infrastructure in order to:

  1. realise the potential performance offered by recent beam optimisation work
  2. design a facility fit for future operation at 2.4 MW
  3. sustain and build upon UK leadership positions in the LBNF collaboration and the broader neutrino and target communities
  4. prepare detailed and costed estimates for critical future in-kind hardware contributions in the event that the UK commits to the LBNF construction phase.

The Panel goes into closed session for the rest of the day.
