PPRP meeting - 21 April 2017

2 March 2017

The next meeting of the Projects Peer Review Panel (PPRP) will take place in Polaris House, North Star Avenue, Swindon, SN2 1SZ on the 21st April 2017. The Panel will be reviewing two project proposals.

Members of the science community should contact Tahmina Aziz (tel: 01793 442058) if they are likely to attend the open presentation.

The proposal being reviewed is as follows:

21 April 2017

  • 10.30 - 11.30 - The Hyper-Kamiokande Experiment Pre-Construction

The Hyper-Kamiokande experiment is the next generation experiment for the study of neutrino oscillations, nucleon decays, and astrophysical neutrinos. The detector is a third generation underground water Cherenkov detector. It will serve as the far detector for a long baseline neutrino oscillation experiment planned for the upgraded J-PARC (Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex) neutrino beam as well as a detector capable of observing proton decays, atmospheric neutrinos, and neutrinos from astronomical origins.

This proposal seeks support for two years and follows the current phase of R&D, where they will progress with designs and prototypes.
  • 11.30 - 14.15 - The Panel goes into closed session.
  • 14.15 - 15.15 - Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) Pre-Construction

The DUNE project is a global experiment in high-energy particle physics that addresses key questions on the origin and structure of the universe. The long-baseline neutrino facility (LBNF) will fire neutrinos 1300 km from Fermilab in Illinois towards the 70,000 ton DUNE detector in South Dakota in order to study neutrino oscillations.

This proposal seeks support for two years for resources to prototype the production processes for the construction of detector elements for this project.

The Panel goes into closed session for the rest of the day.
