Queen's Birthday honours for experts in gravitational wave astronomy, corrosion science and nuclear fusion

STFC congratulates our colleagues Sir Jim Hough, Sir Steve Cowley, Dame Frances Saunders, Graham Hutchings CBE, and Haley Gomez MBE on being honoured in the Queen’s Birthday honours List 2018.

Professor Sir James Hough, University of Glasgow Research Professor in Natural Philosophy in the School of Physics and Astronomy, has received a knighthood in the Queen’s Birthday honours 2018 for services towards the detection of gravitational waves.

STFC Council member Dr Frances Saunders is made a Dame for services to Science and to Engineering.

Former STFC Science Board Chair Professor Alison Davenport, Professor in Corrosion Science, University of Birmingham, has been awarded an OBE for services to Electrochemistry and Corrosion Science.

In addition Professor Sir Steven Cowley, F.R.S., FREng, President, Corpus Christi College, University of Oxford and formerly CEO of UKAEA, has been Knighted for services to Science and to the Development of Nuclear Fusion.

Other notable honours have been given to:

Professor Haley Louise GOMEZ, Head of Outreach and Engagement, School of Physics and Astronomy, Cardiff University awarded an MBE for services to Astrophysics, to Astronomy and to Outreach Activities.

STFC Council Member Dick Elsy and Chief Executive of the High Value Manufacturing Catapult has been awarded an CBE for services to Manufacturing and Technology.

Professor Graham John Hutchings, F.R.S., Director of the UK Catalysis Hub at Research Complex at Harwell (RCAH) and Regius Professor of Chemistry, Cardiff University and Director, Cardiff Catalysis Institute has been awarded a CBE for services to Chemistry and to Innovation.

Professor Richard Henderson, Molecular Biologist and Biophysicist, Medical Research Council Laboratory of Molecular Biology has been made a Companion of Honour in the Queen’s Birthday Honours. The order is a special award held by only 65 people at any one time and has been given for services to Electron Microscopy of Biological Molecules.

There was also a C.B. for Professor John Neil Loughhead, O.B.E., Chief Scientific Adviser, Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy for services to Research and Development in the Energy Sector.
