STFC is working with our partners at Diamond Light Source to support the drive to encourage girls to pursue STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) by leading a series of workshops for 14-16 year olds. The annual event, known as Science in Your Future, took place on Thursday 09th March at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory.

Almost 100 girls from secondary schools up and down the country came to STFC’s Oxfordshire science campus to see first-hand what a career in cutting-edge science looks like. The group enjoyed an inspirational talk by Dr Ceri Brenner and a tour of Diamond Light Source.

They also took part in creative science workshops and met with women working in science and engineering careers, who answered questions and provided insights into what it’s like to work in STEM.

Lynda Donaldson from Ridgeway School commented: “Today was a fantastic opportunity to talk to people in the world of engineering and show the girls what amazing things they can achieve!”

Sarah Darkins, from Langtree School, added: “An inspirational day and a great opportunity for our female students who may have been unclear about how to progress in a science career”.
