We are creating a unified UKRI website that brings together the existing research council, Innovate UK and Research England websites.

Young Rewired State at the National Laboratories

YRS is a brilliant opportunity to meet other coders and work together on amazing projects in a world-leading laboratory.

At Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) in Oxfordshire we’re running YRS Hyperlocal, where we meet once a month on a Saturday afternoon to work on our projects. The next meeting is on Saturday 16 May, 14:00 – 18:00.

We’ll also be participating in the Festival of Code in August 2015.

For more information please email Visit RAL.

This year, STFC’s Scientific Computing Department is a proud sponsor of Young Rewired State (YRS), a fantastic programme that brings together young computer programmers across the country in a celebration of coding and open data. Over 1000 coders took part in 2014.

Young people of 18 and under spend a week at a centre working on a project to use and present open data in a new and useful way. We then all travel to the Festival of Code (held in Plymouth in 2014) for the weekend to present our projects.

Both Rutherford Appleton Laboratory and Daresbury Laboratory were centres in 2014, with participants from ranging from 7 to 18 years old, and we’re very proud of all the projects our teams created! The participants have help from mentors – including staff at the lab, people in the coding community and past YRS participants.

At the weekend Festival of Code, as well as last-minute work on their projects and presentations, the team get the chance to attend some ‘Friday Night Talks’, including one by the Scientific Computing Department’s Andrew Sansum. Andrew talked to a packed lecture theatre about ‘Computing and the Large Hadron Collider,’ and his own career path into computing.

While they’re at the labs, we also give our participants a chance to see the rest of our facilities – from RAL Space to ISIS, our neutron and muon source – and show them how vital computing is to the science and engineering research that happens on site. Both RAL and Daresbury will be YRS centres again.

You can watch the YRS 2014 finale – with STFC projects “SmartPrompt” and “Project Thoth”.

One of our young coders, 11 year old Zoe, had a spare 10 minutes on the coach to the Festival of Code, and created this.
