Resources and Publications

Leaflets, posters, wall charts and booklets

• Leaflets: Full colour, double sided leaflets that open out to A2 sized posters, with introductions to STFC science and technology such as space missions, the Large Hadron Collider, Cosmic Rays and Crystallography
• Posters: One-sided A1 posters of STFC supported missions and experiments
• Cartoon booklets for a fast introduction to the topic or information booklets for those wanting more detail
• Teacher notes to accompany leaflets, such as those on Cosmic Ray and Crystallography.

Films

Educational and inspiring films that can also be used as lesson starters.

• 60 Second Adventures in Astronomy - Voiced by David Mitchell, this series of twelve 60 second animations examines different scientific concepts from the big bang to relativity, from black holes to dark matter
• Colliding Particles - a series of films following just one of the teams of physicists involved in the research at the LHC. The project documents their work at the frontiers of particle physics, exploring the human stories behind the research and investigating the workings of the scientific process itself
• Backstage Science - Taking you "backstage" at some of the UK's most amazing science facilities. They include space telescopes, powerful lasers and football-field sized experiments
• In Search of Giants – 15 short films by starring Professor Brian Cox as he takes us on a journey discussing interesting facts about particle physics.

Websites

STFC and partner organisations offer a range of web-based resources that include interactive learning activities, curriculum links, lesson plans, general project information and input from scientists involved in projects.

• National STEM Centre eLibrary- A website where teachers can find thousands of free resources across a broad range of science subjects.
   
• School Science - A very useful website supported by Research Councils UK (RCUK) that contains a huge number of resources across a number of topics and age ranges.
   
• Sun|trek - A STFC funded website where you can find out more about the Sun and its effect on the Earth
   
• Oxford Sparks - Oxford Sparks is a portal for engaging with a wealth of exciting science taking place across Oxford University. Here you can find a number of free resources including videos, science trails, activities to try at home, mobile phone apps, games, podcasts, virtual tours and plenty more
   
• TES Teaching Resources - TES currently has over 62,000 free teaching resources lesson plans, classroom activities, revision guides and whiteboard resources which have been uploaded, reviewed and rated by members of the teaching profession. Simply type your subject area (i.e. Astronomy) into the search bar to bring up all of the related resources.
• GEOSET - This Global Educational Outreach for Science, Engineering and Technology (GEOSET) website is an easily searchable gateway to a store of SET and related educational material.
   
• Institute of Physics - The IoP's Schools and Colleges section of the website highlighting latest curriculum development initiatives, Affiliated Schools Scheme and professional development.
   
• Lancaster Particle Physics package - This site gives access to a number of simulations and explanations of particle physics, including a section on the LHC. The content is suitable for AS/A2 16+ students.
   
• CERN teacher resources - The Teaching Materials presented here will allow teachers to introduce topics in modern physics to middle and high school students.
   
• CERN's 'Angels and Demons' site - The launch of the film 'Angels and Demons' provided an opportunity to look at the myth versus the reality of the science at CERN. To help with this CERN produced this site, containing teacher resources, slide shows and videos of talks given to teachers visiting CERN.
   
• LHSee - SmartPhone application - LHSee is an App that allows you to see collisions from the Large Hadron Collider - This was funded through the STFC PE Small Awards Scheme
   
• Space Facts - A growing collection of interesting facts about space, covering the planets, solar system, space exploration, galaxies and more..
