RAL Space Optical Systems Group are mainly involved in the design, build and test of optical instrumentation on space and ground based astronomy programmes. We are involved at all levels of optical design, from the first order design derived from the science requirements, through to delivery of finished hardware. We believe in close liaison with the science requirements and engineering teams.
We have particular expertise in Optical System Design, Stray Light Analysis, Optical Component Testing and Optical Alignment.
More Recently RAL space has designed and built two cameras for installation onto the International Space Station, these cameras allow for stunning detail of events on the earth throughout the day and the night. This project was done in collaboration with UrtheCast, a Canadian company, and with help from Russian cosmonauts.
The Optical Systems Group works to an ISO9001:2000 accredited Quality Management System.
